Energy and Climate Change Management

Environmental management is an important issue that must be managed to control financial, social, and reputational risks. BDMS has established environmental management policies and systems to provide direction for resource management. Environmental information is systematic. Data can be used to continuously improve environmental performance. and disclose information to show commitment and transparency towards environmental management to stakeholders.

BDMS EARTH HEALTHCARE Policy

Our commitment to sustainable development goals is establishing comprehensive environmental management guidelines. We are designating a dedicated support department, alongside our corporate human resource management, to formulate a communication plan. This plan will effectively convey our environmental policy to all personnel, fostering mutual understanding and active participation in environmental operations aligned with our goals.

Climate Change Management Policy

The mission is to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, lead to low carbon society and raise awareness of climate change from the continuous greenhouse gas effect on the economy, society and environment. With great attention to climate change, BDMS operates its business while ensuring generating low carbon for the least effect on climate change, in which establishment of targets are clearly set for emission, energy efficiency, waste, and water consumption. In addition, following criteria and suggestions from Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in line with the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature increase to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, and to reach net-zero by 2050, BDMS emissions reduction targets are established.

As a role model in sustainable hospital management, BDMS initiates BDMS Green Hospital with the determination to reach net zero emissions by 2050. To evaluate the environmental practice in the hospitals and subsidiaries, BDMS ensures completeness of the environmental management process according to the Environmental Policy or BDMS Earth Healthcare, environmental sustainability development strategy and sustainable development work scope. Other factors include general environmental management guidelines for healthcare services with excellent standards and practices per international standards. In addition, BDMS implements the rating system called Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) to ensure that the hospitals are certified in the future.

BDMS Energy audit

In relation to the increase in energy efficiency, BDMS has arranged a working team to conduct energy management activities on a regular basis, at least annually, through an energy management report. This process includes monitoring and reporting on energy consumption, implementing energy conservation projects, and providing energy management training. BDMS’s energy management report is audited by an 3rd  party energy auditor from Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE). Through in-depth analysis of our energy consumption, BDMS is able to verify the effectiveness of its energy conservation measures that are implemented in the buildings and identify areas for improvement in energy savings. In addition, BDMS has provided energy efficiency training to employees, with a focus on the air conditioning system. The training aims to raise awareness and support effective daily energy-saving practices.

Environmental Management Training

Emphasizing the knowledge and understanding of climate change adaptation among employees, supplier, and stakeholders, BDMS conducts the businesses following the Climate Change Management Policy to raise awareness and enhance collaboration in tackling environmental challenges, including sustainable energy, waste, and water management.

BDMS promotes training programs and shares best practices to enhance environmental awareness and management among our employees and stakeholders. Our enhanced training programs include:

Training Programs Description

Climate Change Adaptation Planning in Hospital Operations

To strengthen climate resilience, BDMS facilitate training on climate change to responsible all department with a focus on the practical application of adaptation plans tailored to each hospital’s context, especially in high-risk areas. The training covered topics such as managing rising temperatures, addressing water scarcity, and ensuring continuity of medical services during extreme weather events. This initiative aims to enhance organizational preparedness in such uncertain events.

Energy Efficiency Improvement through VSD Installation in Chilled Water Pump System

The hospital provided energy efficiency training to employees, focusing on the air conditioning system, which accounts for 60% of energy use. Employees learned about VSD operation and energy monitoring to support daily energy-saving efforts.

IoT Sensing Thermostat

Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital conducted training on energy efficiency using the IoT Sensing Thermostat system. Staff were trained to understand the application of IoT sensing Thermostat system to support energy-saving in daily operations.

Internal Energy Audit Management Training under BDMS Green Healthcare

BDMS provides knowledge-sharing to employees within its hospitals and subsidiaries on sustainable environmental management systems through Internal Energy Audit Management. This awareness session is a key tool to identify opportunities and strategies to enhance energy performance. The energy audit process aligns with the LEED system, supporting systematic and sustainable energy management practices across the organization. The training aims to raise awareness of energy management in accordance with LEED standards, promoting understanding of energy-efficient and environmentally responsible design and operations. It also encourages active employee participation in aligning hospital practices with international standards, supporting the organization’s long-term sustainability objectives.

Effective Waste Management and Zero Waste Concept under the Waste Competition Project

BDMS organized waste reduction training for employees as part of the Waste Competition, under the BDMS Green Healthcare Initiative. The sessions aimed to promote a culture of systematic waste management and support the Zero Waste to Landfill goal. Employees learned about proper waste segregation, creative upcycling practices, and ways to participate in activities such as the “Waste to Value” photography contest, fostering environmental awareness and sustainable behavior in the workplace.

Water Efficiency Management

Employees received awareness training on effective water efficiency management in line with the organization's Water Management Guidelines. The training covered circular water usage practices (Water Circularity), water recycling and treatment processes, application of modern technologies to reduce water consumption, and proper wastewater management in compliance with environmental standards. The program aimed to equip staff with knowledge and responsibility to support sustainable water practices and minimize environmental impact.

Circular economy

Employees were trained on the circular economy approach to enhance awareness on optimizing resource use, minimizing waste generation, and reducing indirect greenhouse gas (Scope 3) emissions associated with production and consumption activities. This training aligns with BDMS's commitment to sustainable development and supports the Green Healthcare initiative by fostering responsible operations that address environmental challenges and promote long-term resource efficiency.
